Carmen

Bizet: Carmen
(Complete, Semi-staged)

Passion! No other word so accurately encapsulates Bizet's Carmen, a perennial operatic favorite of audiences and musicians alike. One World Symphony -- with a full orchestra and a cast of world-class vocalists -- will bring this tumultuous work to life in two exciting upcoming performances, presented in a modern semi-staged adaptation by Rod Gomez.

First performed in 1874, the opera shocked audiences and enraged critics with its realism (the first act is set in a cigarette factory), the questionable morality of its title character, and a brutal on-stage murder. Carmen's raw emotion, strength, Gypsy exoticism, and outcast status were simultaneously reviled and admired in nineteenth-century European society. The opera retains its power today, transmitted through timeless melodies and universal themes of love and betrayal.
