Falstaff and The Magic Flute

The World Is But a Jest!

In the first concert of their fourth season, One World Symphony and conductor Sung Jin Hong, present scenes from the final operas of two of the most renowned operatic composers of all time, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Giuseppe Verdi.

Although separated by over 100 years, these two delightful works -- The Magic Flute, by Mozart, and Falstaff, by Verdi -- have more in common than might be expected. They are colorful, imaginative, playful works, supremely Shakespearean in their emphasis on complex characters who blend good and evil. Most surprising -- especially for audiences more familiar with the profound, tragic, and contemplative works of Mozart and Verdi -- is that the final operas are both comedies.

The Magic Flute and Falstaff use the elements of magic and otherworldly realms to present the ever-familiar theme of the battle of the sexes, as funny and relevant to audiences today as it was hundreds of years ago. These operas turn reality on its head: Falstaff proclaims, "the world is but a jest," yet we are encouraged to seek a serious message in the fantastical fictions of these operas.

Don't miss this rare opportunity to hear selections from these natural operatic siblings paired on a single program and performed by critically acclaimed vocal soloists and one of the most highly new acclaimed ensembles in New York City!
