Francis Poulenc: The Dialogues of the Carmelites (1957)

Witness the historical and suspenseful music drama The Dialogues of the Carmelites by Francis Poulenc. Based on an insightful psychological adaptation of Gertrud von Le Fort’s novella The Last on the Scaffold, Poulenc’s haunting work takes place in a Carmelite convent during the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror. The French authorities dissolve the convent and the nuns take a vow of martyrdom. In the unforgettable final scene, the nuns march to the scaffold. While the nuns ascend to the guillotine, will a true miracle take place?
