Experience catharsis with these grief-stricken musical compositions. The sorrowful melodies of Henry Purcell’s Fairy Queen and Handel’s tales of unrequited love instill in us a longing for that which we cannot ever fully possess. Reflecting the rococo style of the classical period, Johann Cristoph Bach’s Ach, daß ich Wassers g’nug hätte presents a despondent melody that envelops our hearts. Seamlessly transition to the 20th century with Latin composer Heitor Villa-Lobos in his Melodia Sentimental, with its swaying rhythms reminiscent of two lovers entwined in a precarious relationship. George Crumb’s Apparition explores the darker side of lamentation, as he pushes the boundaries of vocal and instrumental production, utilizing unusual timbres and alternative forms of notation that occasionally involve plucking the strings inside the piano!
Concert length approximately 90 minutes without intermission. Program may be subject to change.
